MOBILE AUDIOLOGY SERVICES
FOR RETIREMENT RESIDENCES

Hearing loss touches more than 50% of seniors aged 75 years and older. Although most seniors living in retirement residences have a certain degree of age-related hearing loss, many of them ignore it or find the hearing care process very difficult to undertake. One can understand that hearing loss is not necessarily the most important health issue that faces seniors. Moreover, certain seniors are troubled with limited mobility, thus, reducing their capability to begin a hearing care process that can demand multiple visits to clinics outside their residence.

Unfortunately, an ignored age-related hearing loss can lead to a reduced participation in social activities, isolation and therefore reducing a hearing impaired individuals’ quality of life. As audiologists, we have the responsibility to offer adapted services to our seniors.

Therefore, to facilitate access to hearing care, ODYO offers comprehensive mobile audiology services in retirement residences.

Our audiologists offer hearing care awareness presentations and activities for the elderly. During these activities, your residents will have the chance to learn more about the ear, age-related hearing loss and the available solutions.

More specifically, here are the topics that are covered during our awareness activities:

  1. The ear and how it works
  2. Signs and symptoms of age-related hearing loss
  3. Communication strategies
  4. Hearing aids
  5. Assistive listening devices

To facilitate access to hearing care, we offer no charge hearing screening tests for the elderly on-site in your retirement residence. During this quick test (15 minutes), the audiologist will be able to inform the resident if he has an age-related hearing loss or if earwax is causing hearing difficulties. At the end of this test, the audiologist will inform the patient if he needs a more complete hearing test.

This service is most useful for residents who:

  1. Have never performed a hearing test in the past
  2. Want to know if they are eligible for a government paid hearing aid
  3. Suspect having a hearing loss
  4. Suspect having logged earwax in their ears

In cases where the person needs further audiology follow up, a complete hearing test by an audiologist is the next step. To complete these hearing tests we temporarily install a mobile soundproof booth at your residence. Our audiologists will perform the hearing tests and emit an intervention plan based on the patients’ communication and hearing care needs.

The audiologist will analyze the persons’ possible admissibility to any governmental payer programs such as the RAMQ, CNESST and Veterans Affairs. If and when necessary, the audiologist will refer the patient to a hearing aid professional (audioprosthesist) or an Ear Nose Throat doctor (ENT) to complete the hearing care support process.
